Robert Mondavi Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon

Robert Mondavi Private Selection has unveiled its Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon.

This wine originates in the coastal vineyards of Monterey County, CA. Grapes are picked at the peak of ripeness, after which the wine is aged and blended to deliver fruit flavors and complexity. A portion of the blend is aged for an additional three months using a combination of new and used Kentucky Bourbon barrels, creating one of the first Bourbon barrel aged wines produced in the United States.

Bourbon barrels are 100% American oak barrels that have been charred to help impart deep toasty flavors and hints of vanilla and brown sugar. Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly suited for Bourbon barrel aging, the company says, because its rich fruit character isn’t overwhelmed by the flavors of the charred casks. This wine is rich, full-bodied on the palette, and the 2014 vintage delivers flavors of black cherry and blackberry.

The Robert Mondavi Private Selection Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon will be released in limited-production and is available nationally now.

Sparkling Wines

Many people think of sparkling wines only for holidays or other celebratory occasions.  Let's not forget that sparkling wines are great summer wines.  Wheather a crisp brut or a smooth demi-sec, bubbly adds a festive touch to picnics, barbecues and other warm weather pursuits.  There is nothing like a bottle of sparkling wine to enjoy an inspiring summer sunset.

Here are five of our favorite go to summer sparklers.  All are reasonably priced from $10.99 to $18.99.

Saint-Hilaire Blanquette de Limoux Brut,  from France, is sourced from the oldest sparkling wine producing region on the planet.  Still made in the traditional way, Saint-Hilaire Brut displays aromas of peach, pear and green apple with a wonderful creamy mouthful.  Think non-vintage champagne at a fraction of the cost.

Destello Cava Brut Reserva, from Spain, is aged in the bottle from eighteen months giving it great character.  Enjoy the fresh scents of apple and pear.  The crisp orchard fruits and a lively minerality carry it to a smooth finish.

Lobetia Pink Bubbles, also from Spain is made from organic estate grown grapes.  Clean and bright coloured with a pale rose tone.  On the nose there is a red cherry bouquet.  On the palate, you have a full flavor with good acidity.

Next, we have Rotari Brut Rose, an elegant sparkler from the Trentino Territory in Northern Italy.  Pale pink in color and an aroma of red fruits.  This wine is delicate and fragrant, softly structured with lively acidity and minerality.

Also from Italy, Tuscany, we have Splendia.  It is a sweet sparkling wine made from Merlot grapes.  Light and delicate, strawberies seemingly pour from the bottle.  A nice fruity alternative to the usual sparkling wine offerings.

These are just sample, stop in and see our large sparkling wine selection.  We're sure you'll  find your own go-to.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Nothing but Rosé

Rosé wine has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. Understand, when I refer to Rosé, I am referring to DRY Rosé wine. DRY= NOT SWEET. These wines are fresh, bright, lively and varied. They are without the extra sugar that buries aroma and flavor. Many consumers have caught Rosé Fever and sales have skyrocketed all over the US including locally. This is also in part to the many excellent offerings available for less than $15.

France is the Motherland of the traditional Dry Rosé. They are by far, the biggest volume producer in the world. It's hard to go wrong with any Rosé from Provence, the Loire or the Rhone Valley. Spain, Italy and the US are producing more each year and the quality has improved greatly. There are also some fine offerings from South America and Australia.

Most Rosé wines are blends of multiple grape varietals. The most common used are Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mouvedre, Pinot Noir and Sangiovese(Italy). These red grapes are lightly crushed and left to macerate for a few hours up to a few days. The juice is then strained out and fermented in tanks. The resulting product, Rosé wine, is meant to be consumed sooner rather than later. Rosé, with a few exceptions should be consumed within the first two or three years of vintage.

The usually annoying cliche' "food-friendly" is meant for Rosé. Their versatility makes them a match for almost anything. These are fantastic barbecue wines and are easily matched to steak, seafood and chicken. They complement French, Italian and Asian cuisine. They are also great to take along on a picnic or to the beach.

Please stop by to see our selection of Rosé wines. New titles and old favorites are arriving daily. You may catch Rosé Fever too.
